Two expeditions of floating universities will take place this summer
Two expeditions of floating universities of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation will take place in the Arctic this summer. They are to be organized by Moscow State University and the joint floating university of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS). The crews of the research vessels will mostly consist of students, announced the ministry's press service on Tuesday.
The expeditions are timed to the Year of Science and Technology in Russia, as well as the Russian Federation chairmanship in the Arctic Council.
“The main principle of floating universities is learning through research. For the first time most of those who will carry out scientific work will be students," added the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
The MSU Floating University will be on an expedition from 19 July to 19 August on the Akademik Boris Petrov vessel in the Barents Sea. Thirty undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students will be heading out on the voyage under the guidance of scientists.
The second expedition - of the floating university MIPT and IO RAS is scheduled for July 12 - August 13 on the Akademik Ioffe vessel.
It is planned that groups studying hydrophysics, hydrochemistry, hydrobiology and benthos, plastic pollution research, meteorology, wind wave research, remote sensing and seismoacoustics will be formed on the vessel.
