Russia is developing a multi-purpose transport ship for NSR
Multipurpose transport refrigerator of "van Papanin type, is currently being developed by St. Petersburg company Yugreftransflot. Due to ice reinforcement and electric propulsion system, the vessel will be able to serve on the Northern Sea Route, scientific and military bases in the Arctic without any icebreaker support. This was reported to TASS by the project supervisor and a member of the company's board of directors Viktor Kot.
"Thanks to its advanced technical equipment, the transport refrigerator ARC-7 ice-class transport refrigerator of the Ivan Papanin type will be high-speed in its class of vessel and will be able to serve for the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route, scientific and military facilities in the Arctic zone," Victor Kot said. - The vessel will be able to promptly deliver and unload cargoes with its own cranes, to carry modules with repair shops, medical and living quarters, as well as groups of specialists".
He specified that the bow part of the ship will be protected by a canopy to prevent the vessel from icing. With new Azipod electric propulsion system and ice reinforcement on the stern, the transport will be able to pass through ice up to 2.1 m thick, even with the stern moving forward. Such refrigerator will be equipped with an ice radar station to build optimal route in the ice.
According to Mr Kot, vessels of Ivan Papanin type will be ecologically safe due to the use of a dual fuel power plant with ability to run on both diesel and liquefied natural gas.
