Work on territories cleaning are being continued in the Arctic

Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation is looking for any possible sources to continue territories cleaning including the Frantz Josef Land Archipelago and Novaya Zemlya, says TASS.  According to Sergey Donskoy, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology, in spite of complicated economy situation, the Arctic is a priority project and we are looking for any possible sources to continue territories cleaning.

Regions also implement the Arctic projects. Minister gave an example of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area which conducts cleaning of the Bely Island and other islands. “I hope that all Arctic regions will join cleaning of the territories and we will try to support them. When it is necessary we will implement Private Public Partnership which the most effective form of cooperation in modern conditions”, added Minister.

In 2015 Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources has voted more than 40 million for Novaya Zemlya cleaning and 640 million for cleaning of the Frantz Josef Land Archipelago. Not less than 8 thousand tons of waste should be taken out and recycled. Archipelagos pollution is mainly a result of business activity: metallic constructions, human wastes, combustive and lubricating materials.

Issues and task of Arctic ecosystem conservation will become an important part of discussion during the V International Forum “Arctic: Today and the Future”.
