Russia plans to build military ice runway airports in the Arctic
The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation is considering the possibility of construction of military ice runway airports in the Arctic. TASS reports that it will be achieved by using technologies that can change the ice structure.
This technology was developed by the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. After the special treatment, a heavy IL-76 military transport aircraft may land on such ice runway.
Yevgeny Storozhuk, Vice-Rector for Economics and Innovation of the Bauman University, has specified that the project was named "the Site".
He has also added that the technology was developed for the mainland territories of the Polar Region, and its essence is to change the ice by means of using special chemical reagents.
