Megafon is preparing to lauch Arctic data cable
Major Russian mobile operator Megafon together with Rosgeologia JSC have announced the lauch of exploration work required to lay a trans-Arctic communication cable, the Vedomosti newspaper reported.
By the end of autumn Professor Logachev vessel will have to study 6.5 thousand kilometers of bottom relief along the Russian coast. Managers of Megafon assume that this is the shortest route for data transmission from Europe to Asia.
Nowadays most of the high-speed fibre connections are currently laid in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, while inter-continental data traffic is expected to jump 200% in the next five years. The estimated cost of the Arctic network project is $1 billion.
