A draft strategy for the Russia's Antarctic activity until 2030 has been developed

A draft strategy for the Russia's Antarctic activity until 2030 has been developed

The strategy defines the main goals, objectives and activities of the Russian Federation in the Antarctic over the next 10 years. The draft document had been prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia together with the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet). Now it is sent to the relevant executive authorities for the coordination.

“The natural and resource importance of the Antarctic and its geopolitical position are the main factors that determine the need for systematic Russian research, executed in the interests of national security and on the basis of equal participation of Russia in the activities of international organizations of the Antarctic Treaty System", noted Murad Kerimov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology.

The implementation of the Strategy will help to maintain peace in the Antarctic zone, strengthen Russia's economic and scientific potential, prevent natural and climatic threats of a global nature and enhance the country's international prestige.

The document envisages increasing the volume of support for the activities of the Russian Antarctic Expedition from the federal budget, implementation of investment projects for construction and equipping service and residential complexes at Russian stations, development of complex scientific research.

It is expected that the draft strategy will be considered by the Russian Government during this year. After its approval, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources will prepare an implementation plan.
