"Russian Arctic" National Park goes to solar energy and wants to develop air service to the mainland

A field base will be built on the Heiss Island in Franz Josef Land within two years. It will become the seventh in the «Russian Arctic» National Park. The development plan for this specially protected natural area was presented by the director of the national park Alexander Kirilov.

He also reported that special attention in the document was paid to the use of alternative energy sources in the park. Experience has shown that in the light time of the year, solar panels allowed the Arctic to do without diesel generators.

«In addition, today, there is an active discussion of the development of air service with Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land archipelagos in terms of the development of tourism. It will help to make travelling to the Russian Arctic cheaper and it will save a lot of time for tourists», - Murmansk State Television Company quotes Kirilov.

Now tourists can visit the national park only as part of the program of Arctic sea cruises. «In addition to touristic function and the development of science in Novaya Zemlya, it is possible to start work on the rational use of natural resources, for example, the traditional collection of common eider fluff », – Deputy Director for Science of the «Russian Arctic» National Park Ivan Mizin said.
