In the Arctic border guards have traumatic weapons to protect against polar bears
Russian border guards were armed with traumatic weapons to protect against polar bears in the Arctic zone. It was reported by the head of the border service of the Federal Security Service of Russia, Vladimir Kulishov.
According to him, polar bear is unique animal that is listed in the Red Book due to a sharp decline due to uncontrolled shooting. «It’s prohibited to shoot bears, even if they come very close and pose a threat to the lives of employees. In case of a dangerous approach of predator, the border guards have a traumatic weapon that can be used to scare away an animal», — Kulishov said.
At the same time, the head noted that the border guards were being briefed on actions in case of a polar bear approaching. He added that in the past few years there had not been a single case of injury to a border guard as a result of a meeting with polar bears.
