Canada has applied to the UN to establish the borders of the continental shelf in the Arctic
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Canada reported that Ottawa had sent a request to the UN commission to establish the borders of the continental shelf in the Arctic.
Representatives of the Canadian Foreign Ministry added that this document was the first and important step in the process of obtaining legal and international recognition of the outer borders of the country's continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean.
«Canada intends to strengthen leadership in the Arctic», — it was said in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Establishing the borders of the Canadian continental shelf is significant for Ottawa, because otherwise it does not ensure the sovereignty of the country and does not protect the interests of citizens, including indigenous peoples in the Arctic.
